marie’s stuff always leaves me reeling, and this is no exception. gorgeous. i love how she places figures in space, how it’s like a single frame from a very dynamic film sequence.

It doesn’t happen in the dark, or the rain, or the strobe flash of a police car’s light streaking over wet pavement. It doesn’t happen breathless or broken, bruised or bleeding. It doesn’t happen in a fever or a fury; it doesn’t happen in fear or even in fierce relief.

It happens in broad daylight, on a busy street. Sherlock stops so abruptly that John goes on another two or three quick strides before he realizes that he’s alone. He stops, turns, stares back at Sherlock quizzically.

“John, I - ” Sherlock says sharply.

John’s frown melts away, the lines of his face softening into a slight, sure smile.

“You can’t know that,” Sherlock says, his hands clenching at his sides.

John’s smile just widens. Sherlock huffs his breath out impatiently, and stalks the few yards that separate them. He pushes right into John’s space and hooks a hand around his nape to tug him in. John yields, his eyes falling closed. At the first touch of lips to warm soft lips John pushes up into the contact, his eyes still closed and the tip of his nose pressing into Sherlock’s cheek. For a moment Sherlock stares and stares, as if the too close curve of John’s quivering eyelid was a mystery worth solving, and then his eyes flicker closed as well.
