yeahno, there’s nothing crazy about getting your characterizations from 7/7. i mean, one of the reasons i think ttobb works despite all the oc’s is that i kept the oc’s severely in line. they’re there to facilitate scenes for john and sherlock, not to tell you anything about themselves. so, 7/7 was a chance to say a little more about them on their own behalf. just remember that the basic premise is insane and barr’s just as straight as hinde but got written way gayer for no good reason at all.

yeah cullen ended up as a demolitions expert - like, blowing out pipeline fires, taking down buildings, does the odd consult for the engineers too. but, the whole blowing up appliances etc is, i hate to say, much more an american (and just the less densely populated parts of america american) thing. the vast majority of british soldiers, even the ones in the commandos, have for example never held a gun other than in uniform. never carried a knife other than in uniform. never handled an explosive other than in uniform. never hit anyone other than in pt uniform. it’s a whole other culture. the degree of exposure the average mid-western, north-western, or south western american kid has to firearms and explosives would classify a british kid as a terrorist and a psycho-waiting-to-happen. chances are, if cullen has a career in explosives in britain, he’s never blown anything up on his own behalf. he’s been trained by professionals, worked alongside professionals, then is a professional himself and trains other people within the same highly regulated framework. none of this going out to the back forty and blazing away at your mom’s old washer. you’d no more do that in britain than you would in massachusetts. the neighbors would not be amused.

honestly i’m not sure these guys are going to be up for more desert. but a nice bit of cultivable ground somewhere? cullen and garrett and blackwood would probably get quite into farming. barr and mac would do it but only if they had too. hinde and henn would sooner starve. or steal chickens.
as a sort of aside (certainly aside enough that it’s not meant to crimp anyone’s planning of booby traps on the compound perimeter) i do think some (most?) of the bravo baker guys (definitely john, blackwood, and henn) are the really terrifyingly well-adjusted kind of elite soldiers who, back home, might be sleeping on the couch and someone comes in and has to call their name several times and then shake them and then beat them with a rolled up magazine to wake them. because, yeah sure they wake with their rifle already on their shoulder in under two seconds if they’re in a warzone, but tottenham is not a warzone, regardless of the met try to tell you. the ‘always on’ war-experienced soldier is a much more american trope; british military socialization prizes the lack of fuck-giving anytime a fuck is not absolutely essential.

sherlock isn’t human. he was grown in a tank of salt water, on one of the lowest, most secure levels of the baskerville laboratories. mycroft holmes is the genius who wrote the vast amount of computer code required to establish and sustain sherlock’s consciousness. john watson is the special ops officer assigned to supervise sherlock during his final testing. now that sherlock’s proved himself, all that remains is to wipe him clean and put him to work for real.
except that sherlock’s developed a taste for autonomy, and john’s realizing that there really isn’t anyone else on earth quite like sherlock holmes.
I’m reminded of the LOTR cast and their tattoos. :)

reblogging because a) JOHN IN BATTLEDRESS, and b) here’s the thing. i’m not actually in sherlock fandom. i could write a lot of stories that didn’t feature sherlock, but i don’t have a single idea in my head that doesn’t feature john in the lead role. i mean, i write sherlock because sherlock’s the shiny that john wants, and i like giving him what he wants. he’s just … he’s dreamy.

afterwards, after they were all home, when john and sherlock were married and living in baker street, and hinde had set the date with rami, they got tattoos. weirdly, mac and henn were the first two, even though henn was shagging his way through taunton and mac had stopped letting him bunk in on nights he didn’t feel like going out. but they went to one of the tattoo joints in taunton and had their old section call sign tattooed in neat small numbers and letters across their hearts. mac showed his to barr, and the following weekend mac and henn went back with barr, garrett and cullen when they got the same thing done. blackwood was in london with his families, but they sent him a phone pic of mac’s tattoo, and he brought it to a place in earl’s court and got done up too. then it was just hinde, and he hemmed and hawed and then gave in during his stag weekend, because he was afraid of what they’d do to him if he didn’t.
there’s no way to tell when the last two were done, nor how the story of the other tattoos reached them. all i know is, john’s wavered a little, the numbers and letters flexing slightly to accommodate the stretched and slivered scarring of his chest, and sherlock’s seemed to float below the surface of his pale, translucent skin. nine men, all with “221 bravo baker” etched across their hearts. nine men making real, what was already true.
Just wanted to say hi and send along a little introductory gift, - since I hear you’re partial to bit of artfully lit John Watson - and to say thank you for your stories. Things just don’t sit quite the same in SherlockVerse after TTOBB!
oh hhhhhell. so, yeah, this is my favorite shot of john, absolutely. there’s just so much happening there - grim and hard-edged and alert and coiled for action and torn open and unashamed.
